SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA
Dr. Bob Harman’s career is a captivating journey of innovation, leadership, and transformative breakthroughs in both veterinary and human medicine. Armed with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a Master’s in Epidemiology from the prestigious University of California, Davis, Dr. Harman’s professional path began in large animal medicine and soon diverged into extraordinary territories.
As the founder of HTI Bio-Services, he revolutionized veterinary pharmaceutical research by conducting clinical trials across species—including dogs, cats, horses, and cattle—and later expanded into groundbreaking human preclinical studies. Under his leadership, HTI Bio-Services contributed to revolutionary medical advancements, such as the first cardiac stent (J&J) and the first cell therapy for burn wounds (Dermagraft). Over a decade, Dr. Harman authored more than 500 study reports, several book chapters, and peer-reviewed publications, cementing his reputation as a leader in animal and human health innovation.
After selling HTI Bio-Services, Dr. Harman briefly retired to pursue his passion for polo—only to be inspired back into industry after witnessing a stem cell demonstration that sparked a new vision. In 2002, he founded VetStem Biopharma, the first U.S. commercial veterinary stem cell company, pioneering the use of regenerative medicine in animals. Over the last two decades as CEO, he has helped transform veterinary medicine, enabling the treatment of over 25,000 animals across 61 species and more than 40 diseases.
A Champion for Rare and Endangered Species
Dr. Harman’s expertise extends far beyond traditional veterinary practice. He has applied his knowledge of regenerative medicine to treating rare and endangered exotic species in collaboration with esteemed organizations such as the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, SeaWorld, and other prominent zoos and aquatic parks. His work has helped preserve and improve the lives of iconic species, demonstrating the versatility and transformative potential of stem cell therapy in even the most extraordinary and challenging cases. From elephants to marine mammals, Dr. Harman’s efforts exemplify the intersection of innovation and conservation.
From Translational Medicine to Human Breakthroughs
In keeping with his passion for translational medicine—a concept introduced to him at UC Davis by Dr. Calvin Schwabe, the modern father of One Medicine—Dr. Harman co-founded Personalized Stem Cells, Inc. (PSC). This innovative human stem cell company builds on his 20+ years of regenerative veterinary experience. PSC’s groundbreaking achievements include completing a first-in-man knee arthritis stem cell study and advancing toward FDA approval for human therapies. Additionally, PSC has launched a stem cell banking initiative, bringing the promise of regenerative medicine directly to patients.
Dr. Harman’s compelling blend of expertise, pioneering spirit, and passion for regenerative medicine makes him a sought-after speaker and interview guest. Whether discussing his journey from veterinary medicine to cutting-edge human therapies or exploring the vast potential of stem cell technology, Dr. Harman offers fascinating insights that inspire professionals and lay audiences alike. If you’re ready to dive into the future of medicine and hear how stem cells are changing lives (and knees!), Dr. Harman is the person to call.
